The Florida Governor’s Council on Indian Affairs, Inc., the “Council” is a private, non-profit corporation which was incorporated under the laws of Florida at the direction of Executive Order #74-23.
Main responsibilities of the Council is to advise the Governor of Florida on matters affecting the rights and interests of the Indian people in the State, representing the interests of the Indian people of Florida before various state agencies and with assisting the State in carrying out its responsibilities to the Indian people of Florida. Additionally, the Council is to provide or help to provide technical assistance for the educational, economic, social, and cultural advancement of the Indian people within the State of Florida.
The Council also operates the Employment and Training Program as a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Native American grantee. We are responsible for the allocation and distribution of this funding to economically disadvantaged, underemployed, or unemployed American Indians, Native Alaskans and Native Hawaiians who are seeking employment and training assistance. We also sponsors an annual Florida Indian Youth Program during the summer that provides an intensive away from home educational experience for approximately 50 Native American youths.
